For some people, problems like irregular corneas or dry eye can keep them from wearing contacts. However, there is a solution. Scleral contact lenses can be helpful for patients suffering from a wide variety of eye conditions while offering many of the same benefits as traditional contacts. If you are in the Woodlands or Tomball areas, call our optometry team at Today's Vision Creekside to find out if scleral lenses are the right eyewear option for you.
While traditional lenses only cover the cornea, scleral lenses cover the white part of the eye, known as the sclera. These contacts come in three different sizes, but all cover some portion of the sclera.
These contacts are larger than regular gas-permeable contacts, but they offer many of the same benefits. We often recommend scleral lenses for patients suffering from dry eyes. Since scleral lenses vault over the cornea, they allow space for tears to properly moisturize the eye. We also recommend scleral contact lenses for patients suffering from astigmatism or keratoconus.
Semi-scleral and corneo-scleral contacts are bigger than regular gas-permeable lenses and cover a small amount of the sclera. Mini-scleral contacts cover the entire front of the eye, including all visible sclera. Full scleral contacts are the largest type that provides the greatest amount of clearance between the back surface of the lens and the cornea.
If you have problems wearing contacts, our eye doctor can determine if scleral contact lenses are right for you. Our Team at Today's Vision Creekside is dedicated to providing our patients the eye care they need for optimal vision performance and eye health throughout daily life. If you are suffering from any eye-related issues or want to schedule a contact lens exam, call our Tomball office today.
