Diabetic Eye Diseases

Many Americans currently suffer from diabetes. This is a condition that can go unnoticed, or that people can be born with. It makes it difficult to regulate blood sugar levels, affecting many functions of the body, including your eyes and eyesight. Unfortunately, not many people think that a diabetic exam for the eyes is necessary if living with diabetes. However, it may be important to get help from an eye doctor who can help diagnose issues that have to do with eye diseases caused by diabetes, provide treatment options for these diseases, and help monitor their progress to prevent them from impacting your vision.

At Today's Vision Creekside, we're here to help residents of The Woodlands, TX, and Tomball, TX, get the help they need to restore their vision, see clearly using optical care, and get help for diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases. Get an eye exam, diabetic exam, opical care, and more from our optometrist on our optometry team.

What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is a type of eye disease caused by diabetes. When people have diabetes, their blood sugar levels might go uncontrolled, leading to excess buildup of glucose in the bloodstream. Some of this glucose ends up in the sensitive retinas of the eyes, and destroy the retina overtime.

To compensate, the eye begins to form blood vessels that are weak and rupture, leading to damage over time to the eye. There is no cure for diabetic retinopathy, so it's important to visit an eye doctor regularly who can examine your eyes thoroughly for diabetic retinopathy, as well as other diseases like cataracts and glaucoma that can also be caused by diabetes.

Do I Need a Diabetic Exam for the Eyes?

If you have diabetes, it's recommend you visit an eye doctor at least once a year. Our eye doctor can dilate your eyes and take a deeper look at its overall structure. She can recommend medications, surgery, and most importantly, lifestyle changes to get your blood sugar levels under control and prevent total or partial vision loss due to diabetes.

Regulating your blood sugar and using appropriate eyewear can a good treatment for these diseases, but our optometrist might also recommend emergency surgery and medications.
