What Is Corneal Disease?

Corneal disease is a group of eye conditions affecting the cornea, which is the lens that allows you to see. Corneal disease can cause infections, deterioration of the eye, and other issues. This leads to vision distortion, clouding, scarring, and eventually blindness.

Types of Corneal Disease

There are various conditions that fall under corneal disease. However, there are three main types of this condition.

Keratoconus

This condition is the thinning and weakening of the cornea. It causes the cornea to protrude and become cone-shaped. This condition can progress gradually, rapidly, or intermittently. Both eyes usually have this condition, but it can be in only one. Keratoconus can be lifelong or last for several years. The symptoms of this condition include blurred vision, increased sensitivity to glare and bright light, double vision, and sudden clouding or worsening of the vision.

Fuch's Endothelial Dystrophy

This condition is hereditary and occurs when the inner cell layer of the cornea forms abnormally. When this layer, called the endothelial, doesn’t function correctly, it can’t pump fluids out of the eye and causes swelling. This may lead to foggy or cloudy vision.

Bullous Keratopathy

This condition can develop in response to Fuch’s endothelial dystrophy. It occurs when the cornea becomes permanently swollen due to fluid buildup, and can cause severe pain.

Causes of Corneal Disease

There are various causes of corneal disease, and it could be caused by a combination of factors. These include:

  • Hereditary causes
  • Hormonal and environmental factors: allergies and rubbing the eyes
  • Infections: viral, fungal, and bacterial infections
  • Eye trauma
  • Some other eye diseases
  • Systemic diseases
  • Age: could start in the upper teens and develops in 50s and 60s
  • Intraocular and cataract lens implant surgeries
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes

Corneal Disease Treatment

It takes various tests, labs, and eye examinations to diagnose corneal disease. There are several forms of treatment depending on the severity of the conditions. This may include eye drops, medications, or laser therapy. Some cases require a special type of contact lens. Scleral contact lenses are larger than typical lenses and are used for various eye conditions, like corneal disease. In severe cases of corneal disease, surgery many be necessary.
