Fuch's Endothelial Dystrophy

Understanding Fuch's Endothelial Dystrophy

Fuch's endothelial dystrophy is a cornea disease that may have a genetic cause. It affects the thinnest layer of cells found on the front of the cornea. This thin layer of cells is what regulates the amount of moisture within the cornea. When these cells are damaged, it can disrupt the fluid balance within the cornea causing your vision to be altered. Our optometrist here at Today's Vision Creekside in Tomball, TX, knows all about Fuch’s Endothelial Dystrophy and its treatments.

Characteristics

One of the possible characteristics of Fuch's endothelial dystrophy is blurred vision when you first wake up in the morning. Although it eventually clears throughout the day, the blurriness will be back in the morning. Deposits begin to develop throughout the cornea. Over time, small blisters may form. As they grow and eventually burst, they can cause extreme discomfort. Cell damage begins to occur more rapidly and will eventually cause your vision to worsen.

Long-Term Effect on Vision

In most cases, Fuch's endothelial dystrophy is commonly diagnosed by an eye doctor in individuals who are in their 40's and sometimes in their 50's. There are instances of individuals in their 20's being diagnosed with a rare condition that is genetically like Fuch's. In either type of eye condition, the damage to the cells of the cornea will result in long-term vision problems. Over time, the condition will continue to worsen and a sensitivity to bright lights will become a problem as well.

Treatment Options

For milder versions of the condition, eye medications in the form of drops or creams can be applied to the eyes to help control the amount of fluid that is located within the cornea. Soft contact lenses may also be worn to protect the cornea and make your eyes more comfortable. Another option is surgery.
