How a Diabetic Exam Helps Manage Diabetic Retinopathy

The most common issue affecting the eyes of people with diabetes is a condition called diabetic retinopathy. In fact, this condition affects nearly a third of people with diabetes. It can cause blood vessels to change, eventually leading to them breaking open. Once this occurs, fluid can leak into the retina, which can lead to permanent vision loss.

This can lead to macula edema, in which the patient's macula will no longer be able to focus incoming light.
