In our office, a diabetic exam is a specific type of eye exam performed by an eye doctor in Tomball, TX that looks for the problems and conditions that are associated with a patient having diabetes. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, it's a good idea to ask for this type of eye exam. Typically, a diabetic eye exam will check for several conditions. We at Today’s Vision Creekside, with our eye doctor in Tomball, TX, know a lot about the importance of getting a diabetic exam such as an eye exam in The Woodlands, TX. We have an “optometrist near me” and “optical near me”

How a Diabetic Exam Helps Manage Diabetic Retinopathy

The most common issue affecting the eyes of people with diabetes is a condition called diabetic retinopathy. In fact, this condition affects nearly a third of people with diabetes. It can cause blood vessels to change, eventually leading to them breaking open. Once this occurs, fluid can leak into the retina, which can lead to permanent vision loss.

During a diabetic exam, our eye doctor will look at the blood vessels in and around your eyes to check for signs of this. If this condition is allowed to progress, the affected blood vessels can put a lot of stress on a part of the eye known as the macula. This can lead to macula edema, in which the patient's macula will no longer be able to focus incoming light. Patients with the condition will experience blind spots or floaters in their central field of vision.

Diabetes can cause a lot of problems with the eye, including permanent damage to the optic nerve. Unfortunately, a lot of these problems are difficult for patients to notice on their own. Signs of early damage to blood vessels and the tissues around the eye can be apparent to an eye doctor with special equipment.
